All of us have decisions to make about how we manage our own household finances. For example, we need to buy food every week as, whether we like it or not, we need to eat to survive! However, there are other types of expenditure that require a lot of forward planning and saving. Something really special, like saving for a wedding or for a house deposit. The challenge that we have in those situations is that the cost of daily life still needs to be met, even when we are saving up for the really special occasion!
Church finances have much the same challenge! Together we are saving up for the redevelopment of the church. It’s something really special and it’s a once-in-a-lifetime event and it will need all of us to play our part and contribute in whatever way we can. But alongside that, the day to day costs of the church still needs to be met in order to enable the ministry of the church to continue to thrive and to bring the good news of Jesus to the community of Ware, and beyond.
The best way of ensuring that the cost of the daily running of the ministry of the church can be met is to know that we have a regular income, ideally monthly. Anyone trying to run their household on a variable income will know the difficulties that this can present when you are not sure from month to month what may happen!
When the PCC sets the budget for the year, we make an estimate of income based on the regular income we have and we set our budget for expenditure based on what we believe God is calling us to do. Where there is a gap, we pray that God will provide the difference! And we ask you to pray too – both that the PCC is wise in allocating the funds that we do have and also that God would provide all that we need.
We give thanks for the enormous generosity of Christ Church over the last year which, whilst there is still a long way to go, has seen a steadily increasing fund to pay for the redevelopment of the church. Thank you for sharing that vision and responding as it’s incredibly exciting to see those plans coming together! We did, however, have a bit of a shortfall in income in 2017 for the ongoing ministry of the church. You can hear more about that at the upcoming APCM. But we therefore wanted to share with you that the budget for this year will need an increase in donations to church general funds of £29,500. Before you panic that this is a very large number (which, of course, it is by itself) remember that we are a big family and we need to achieve this together as a family, not on our own.
So perhaps this breaks it down a bit better:
– If 2 people gave £150 per month
– And 8 people gave £100 per month
– And 10 people gave £50 per month
– And 12 people gave £25 per month
– And 15 people gave £5 per month
then we will have all we need for the year! Does that sound a bit less scary? Would you be able to pray and consider if you could be one of those who can help the wider Christ Church family at this time, either by starting to give regularly for the first time, or considering increasing your existing giving? Do take a look at christchurchware.co.uk/giving if you’d like more information on how to make a regular gift or you can speak to me, if that would be helpful, on 01920 487267 ext 206 on a Thursday or Friday.
We are always immensely grateful to God for the generosity of this church family and we do trust that God will provide what is needed in ways we probably can’t yet see, but that provision is usually through his people!
Thank you again for being a part of this and do let me know if you would like more information or you would feel able to respond.
