When you left school, was that the point you felt that you had become an adult? For some, leaving school marks the end of adolescence and the beginning of adult life. Perhaps it wasn’t until you got married, or had children, or stepped into your first home. Some “grown-ups” don’t feel like adults at 40!
What about your faith, when did you feel like a Christian? Can you name the date and hour that it happened or is it a long journey that you are still on?
I think it’s really helpful and important to set markers and milestones in our main transition of life. They help us to navigate who we are and remember where we have come from (like the Israelites with their piles of rocks!). The youth summer trip to Soul Survivor marks, for some of our teenagers, a milestone in their faith. Committing a week in the summer holidays at a place that is “super Goddy”, away from parents and the routine of school. It is often a moment of awe, seeing that God is so much bigger and more real than they thought possible. The atmosphere in the minibus on the way home is always so different than it is on the way. On the way, there’s nervous excitement and a bit of awkwardness but on the way back a sense of ease and peace even with the looming start of a new term. Soul Survivor is a rite of passage for many young people moving out of children’s church to choosing God in growing maturity.
Another amazing opportunity to set a milestone for our young people this year is through confirmation. The Bishop is coming to us on November the 5th for another special evening of baptisms and confirmations. The young people that commit to this make a public declaration of their faith in Christ, not because their parents are Christians, or their friend dragged them along, but on their own two feet. In receiving the sign of the cross and celebrating with the whole church, they mark a change. They have found Him and are now going to live for Him.
Please pray for our young people as they choose to walk these rites of passage, building a history with the Lord and starting fresh adventures with Him this year.
